Following the non-conference, neutral-site game, UVM is now 7-8 on the season, while Cal drops to 3-8.
"I'm proud of the way we battled," said head coach
Kate Pfeifer. "It was a strong defensive effort all weekend, and we created significant chances on attack today as well. Both teams fought hard for the result, and it's nice to see our hard work pay off."
Saturday's match also saw
Lauren Tucker convert a penalty corner for the third time in the last five matches.
Anne-Marie Farmer inserted to
Olivia Hurd in the 13th minute, setting the stage for Tucker to find the back of the cage from the top of the circle and giving the Catamounts a 1-0 advantage. It was Tucker's third goal of the season.
Vermont doubled the lead in the 23rd minute. Warren went 1-on-1 with Cal goalkeeper Kori Griswold, slipping the ball past the right side of Griswold and moving the score to 2-0 on her 10th goal.
The teams reached halftime with a 2-1 margin after the Bears' Melina Moore and Sydney Earle set up Mara Gutierrez on a penalty corner in the 28th minute, ultimately resulting in the sophomore's second tally of the fall.
Warren came up big again in the 59th minute with her second of the day, corralling a rebound on the right side of the circle to give the Catamounts a 3-1 lead.
Moore added her fifth goal in the 66th minute, burying a rebound in front of the cage and bringing the Bears back within one, but the 3-2 score stood for the balance of the match en route to the triumph for UVM.
Catamounts goalkeeper compiled nine saves over the course of the match, while Griswold tallied two stops. Benwood turned aside five Bears shots in the final 10 minutes of the contest to preserve the victory, the 14th of her career. The junior needs one more win to tie Shannon Kelly (1991-94) for seventh in program history in that category.
UVM now resumes conference play and embarks on the second half of its divisional round robin schedule, beginning with a 3 p.m. road match at New Hampshire on Friday, Oct. 21.
