UVM Handles Lyndon State with Ease in Home Opener

FINAL SCORE: Vermont 79, Lyndon State 20  
BURLINGTON, Vt. – Vermont set a record for the fewest points allowed in a home opener on record since 1960. The Catamounts topped in-state foe Lyndon State 79-20 on Saturday afternoon at Patrick Gymnasium. The victory marked the opening game of the Gulf Coast Showcase for UVM.

UVM improves to 3-1 overall and 39-17 all-time in home openers. Lyndon State evens out at 1-1 on the season.
 
UVM's defense held Lyndon to only 12.1% (7-for-58) shooting from the floor in the win. On the offensive end of the floor, the Catamounts shot 46.6% (27-for-58) overall and 40.0% (12-for-30) from beyond the arc. Vermont out-rebounded Lyndon 55-28, scored 30 points in the paint, and recorded 18 second chance points.
 
Vermont had scoring coming from all angles as 10 of the 11 Catamounts who stepped onto the floor scored a point. Darren Payen led the way with a game-high 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting and finished only a rebound shy of a double-double with nine rebounds. Kurt Steidl and Cam Ward added 10 points and three assists each. Drew Urquhart had a solid outing with nine points and grabbed seven rebounds off the glass. Ernie Duncan matched Urquhart with nine points by making a trio of shots from long range.
 
Lyndon was paced by Eric Vargas with four points and dished away four assists. Alexis Ravelo and Robert Rouelle added four points apiece as Rouelle also finished second on the team with six rebounds. Raymond Monroe tallied a team-high seven rebounds, including three on the offensive glass.
 
The Catamounts came roaring out of the gate with a 19-0 run to begin the half. After Lyndon sank a pair of free throws, UVM closed out the first period on a 24-2 run and took a 43-4 lead into the break.
 
The Hornets opened the second half on a 7-0 run with layups coming from Rouelle and Ravelo, but UVM's offense countered with another big run. With 15 minutes remaining in the game, Vermont produced a 38-9 run to close out the final period.
 
The win marks the fewest points allowed by Vermont since the 1936-37 season when the Cats held Norwich and Middlebury to 20 points.
 
Vermont heads south to Estero, Fla. starting Monday (Nov. 21) for the tournament portion of the Gulf Coast Showcase.
