Cats Upset Stony Brook in America East Semifinals

FINAL SCORE: No. 3 Vermont 10, No. 2 Stony Brook 9
ALBANY, N.Y. – Junior Cam Milligan shoveled in a shot with his back to net with 3:26 remaining to lift the No. 3-seeded Vermont Catamounts to a 10-9 upset win over No. 2 Stony Brook in the America East Semifinals at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium on the campus of the University at Albany.

Junior goalkeeper Jon Kaplan added a season-high 17 saves in the Vermont net to help backstop UVM's first-ever America East win and help the Catamounts advance to the America East Championship game for the first time in program history.
 
UVM will face the winner of No. 4 Hartfordt on Saturday (May 7) at 10 a.m. on ESPNU. The Hawks upset top-seeded and fourth ranked Albany, 11-10 in overtime.
 
Vermont, which also picked up its first win over the Seawolves in the all-time series, improves to 9-7. Stony Brook, which entered the game ranked 14th in the country, finishes the year with a 12-4 record.

America East Offensive Player of the Year Ian MacKay opened the scoring at the 12:34 mark of the first half. A loose ball bounced to Cam Stafford, he swung a pass over to MacKay who buried the scoring opportunity for his 40th goal of the year.
 
Stony Brook answered with four straight goals off the stick of three different players. The Seawovles tallied two goals 44 seconds apart at the five-minute mark and Challen Rogers' second goal of the game beat the buzzer to end the first quarter and give SBU a 4-1 lead at the end of the one period of play.
 
The Catamounts and Seawolves traded goals in the second quarter. Michael Clarke's sixth goal of the season and the first tally of the second period cut Stony Brook's lead to two.  McLean Chicquen converted a man-up opportunity for the Seawolves at the 8:27 mark to push Stony Brook's lead to three. UVM goalkeeper Jon Kaplan made an initial save, but the ball popped out of his stick to Chicqen's stick who quickly put back the rebound.
 
Ryan Blitzer opened the scoring in the third period to push Stony Brook's lead to three, but the Catamounts rallied, scoring four straight. James Barlow's first goal of the game at the 5:56 mark gave Vermont its first lead of the game, 7-6.
 
Blitzer scored again with 45 seconds remaining in the third and Brody Eastwood added a goal with just two seconds left on the clock shove the Seawolves back in front, 8-7, at the end of the third period.
 
Jack Knight, an America East All-Rookie selection, opened the scoring in the final quarter to even the game for the third time, 8-8.
 
Chris Hughes netted an unassisted goal at the 7:29 mark to push Stony Brook in front 9-8, but the Catamounts answered twice in the final five minutes to pull out the upset. Matt Gudas finished off an assist from Knight to knot the game up at 9-9 and Milligan added the go-ahead goal with 3:26 left.
 
NOTES: Seven different Catamounts netted a goal to lead the Vermont offense … Ian MacKay extended his points-streak to 45 games, the sixth longest in Division I lacrosse … He reached the 40-goal mark for the second straight season … UVM entered the game 0-16 against the Seawolves in the all-time series … Vermont will be making its first-ever appearance in the America East Championship Game and earned its first-ever win in the America East Tournament in its fifth appearance … The Catamounts are making back-to-back appearances in the America East Tournament for the first time in program history … UVM's nine wins are the most since the 2006 season (9-7) … The nine wins are also the most under head coach Ryan Curtis.
