The Catamounts improved to 6-1-0 on the year, rebounding from their first defeat on Sunday at VCU. Bryant (0-6-0) dropped its sixth straight decision to begin the season.
Wright and Yeboah combined for seven points in the victory, and the pair has now amassed a total of 36 points on 13 goals and 10 assists this season. Fellow senior
Shane Haley added his first goal of the year late in the first half.
"I thought we started poorly, but made a few adjustments and worked past their physicality to give ourselves the advantage and the lead," said head coach
Jesse Cormier. "Then in the second half, Bryant intensified, scored early and went fully direct which changed the game into a dogfight. In the end, we found a way, but there are plenty of things to do better and improve for an undefeated Marist team which beat Dayton and is making noise in the national rankings."
Vermont opened the scoring with 15 and a half minutes left in the opening half. Wright and Yeboah, the country's top scoring duo entering the match, exchanged a give-and-go to spring Wright into the right side of the Bryant penalty box. The senior ripped a right-footed effort short side into the back of the net to beat Nick Stewart (10 saves) for his fifth goal of the season.
Wright was the catalyst late in the half as the Catamounts doubled their lead. The Ontario native slipped a pass to the top of the 18-yard box for Haley, who settled the ball before driving a low half-volley inside the right post. UVM took a seemingly commanding 2-0 lead into the locker room.
Less than four minutes into the second half, Nathaniel Brown quickly sliced into the Vermont lead with a long-range effort. The sophomore cut to his left foot before curling a shot into the lower right corner past
Aron Runarsson (two saves) from 30 yards away.
The Bulldogs were down to 10 men with just over a half hour to play when Derek Blanchette was shown a straight red card after a sliding challenge near the Bryant bench. Shortly after, the hosts nearly knotted the score but had an open rebound opportunity called back due to offside.
Bryant eventually found the game-tying goal in the 70th minute when a long free kick was deflected up in the air inside the Vermont penalty area. James Cochrane located the loose ball and flicked a header into the right side of the net for his first career goal.
Early in overtime, Stewart punched away a quality effort off the right foot of
Stefan Lamanna from the edge of the 18. Runarsson then came out aggressively at the other end to deny Ricardo Becerra after a ball was played over the top of the UVM back line.
Eric Venezia replaced Runarsson in net late in the first overtime.
With a barely a minute elapsed in the second overtime, Wright collected the ball and took one dribble along the right end line before centering a pass to Yeboah at the top of the six. The senior held off a defender and redirected a first-time shot to the near post for his eighth of the year and third game-winner, both team-highs.
Wright's second assist of the day was his nation-leading ninth of the year, while Haley added a secondary assist on the game-winning play.
Vermont finished the contest with a dominant 24-10 edge in shots.
Ranked second in the NSCAA East Region, UVM closes a four-game road trip on Saturday (Sept. 17) with a 7 p.m. kickoff against unbeaten Marist (4-0-1), the third-ranked team in the Northeast. Links to pay-per-view video and live stats are available on the men's soccer schedule page.
