PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Freshman
Rachel Phillips scored for the first time in her career, but a Providence goal late in the first half and a penalty stroke tally in the second half were too much for the Vermont field hockey team as UVM fell to the Friars 3-1 Friday at Lennon Family Field.

Season Stats
Following Friday's match, both teams are now 2-1 on the season.
The Friars struck first in the 16th minute. Shortly after Emily Humiston inserted a penalty corner, Adrienne Houle set up Megan Hamilton for an initial shot. Hamilton then found the ball on her stick once again and put it home to give Providence the early 1-0 advantage.
Vermont quickly responded, tying the score at one in the 23rd minute. Phillips dribbled into the circle and sent a shot past Friars goalie Megan Guilbert, earning her first collegiate goal.
Seven minutes later, Sylvia Miller helped Providence regain the lead. Amid a scramble in front of the cage, Miller corralled the ball and scored to move the score to 2-1 as the teams entered halftime.
A penalty stroke goal in the 62nd minute by the Friars' Kali Kilmer made the score 3-1 in favor of Providence, which stood for the balance of the match.
Despite the loss, junior
Lena Benwood highlighted the game for the Catamounts with seven saves. Guilbert made one stop for Providence. Both teams were granted six penalty corners in the match.
The Catamounts now trek back to Vermont and return to the pitch on Sunday afternoon, hosting Northeastern at Moulton Winder Field at 1 p.m. Fans are encouraged to come out and pick up a complimentary field hockey team poster courtesy of The UPS Store of South Burlington.
