CatamounTV Highlights
The win, Vermont's first against NU in field hockey, puts the Catamounts at 3-1 on the season. The Huskies fall to 2-2.
The comeback was also highlighted by a 12-3 second half shot difference in favor of the Catamounts after Northeastern outshot UVM 9-1 in the first stanza.
Northeastern needed little time to find the scoreboard, winning that race in the second minute. Natalie Stewart sent a pass across the circle which was received by Jamie Bartucca, who tapped the ball past Catamounts keeper
Lena Benwood.
In the 20th minute, the Huskies doubled their lead following a penalty corner. With June Curry-Lindahl providing the insert and Stewart acting as the stopper, Laura MacLachlan wound up to fire a shot for a goal.
Vermont responded in the 52nd minute.
Lauren Tucker put an initial shot on goal on a penalty corner inserted by
Anne-Marie Farmer. After Huskies keeper Becky Garner turned aside the attempt, O'Brien grabbed the rebound and tallied her first goal of the season.
UVM tied the score at two-apiece in the 55th minute when
Rachel Phillips sent the ball towards the cage from outside the circle. On a deflection from Picchi, the ball came off the ground and sailed past Garner. The goal was Picchi's second of the season.
The rally was ultimately capped by Warren in the 61st minute. The sequence began when the sophomore dribbled into the circle, drove across the goal mouth and put a shot towards the cage. Garner stopped the attempt, but the ball was redirected back towards the Northeastern keeper and crossed the goal-line amid a scramble for Warren's third tally of the season.
The Huskies had one final opportunity in the 63rd minute when Stewart corralled the ball in the circle and attempted a shot that ended up wide.
Benwood finished the afternoon with four saves and needed just one in the second half to preserve the victory. Garner turned aside seven shots for Northeastern.
With the win, Vermont solidifies its first 3-0 start to the home schedule since 2008, when the team won its opening five matches at Moulton Winder Field. The squad now prepares to face Quinnipiac on Friday, Sept. 9, with the match starting at 3 p.m. from Moulton Winder Field.
