ITHACA, N.Y. – A three-goal first half was too much for the Vermont field hockey team to overcome as the Catamounts fell to Cornell 4-1 in the team's last non-conference matchup on Sunday at Marsha Dodson Field.

UVM falls to 6-4 entering America East play and the Big Red are now 5-3.

The Big Red won the race to the scoreboard in the 23rd minute, taking a 1-0 lead on Sam McILwrick's second goal of the season. Isabel Josephs played a role in both of Cornell's next two tallies, setting up Katy Weeks (32nd minute) and Gabby DePetro (33rd minute) to send the teams into halftime with a 3-0 margin.

Vermont narrowed the score to 3-1 in the 58th minute when
Landon Warren found the back of the cage. With the sophomore camped on the doorstep,
Anne-Marie Farmer sent a pass across the circle which was received by Warren and tapped home for the goal.

Cornell quickly responded, however, regaining its three-goal advantage in the 63rd minute on Kjersti Anderson's second goal. That put the Big Red ahead by a 4-1 score, which stood for the remainder of the afternoon.

Lena Benwood made a season-high nine saves for the Catamounts in the defeat, including several tremendous stops throughout the match.

The Catamounts are back at Moulton Winder Field on Sunday, Oct. 2 as the team opens the America East schedule with New Hampshire at 1 p.m. The 1 p.m. match also represents Vermont field hockey's annual Rally Against Cancer Game presented by Otter Creek Awnings and Vermont Custom Closets. Fans are encouraged to join the Catamounts in wearing pink at the game in support of the fight against cancer. Additionally, donations to the University of Vermont Cancer Center will be accepted at the marketing table on the concourse of Moulton Winder Field.
