"We knew it was going to be a conference battle," head coach
Kate Pfeifer said. "UNH is an incredible team and give credit to them, this was a great back-and-forth match today. We talked about capitalizing on moments that we might have today. I thought our kids were fighting and really looking for the win out there today."
Vermont reached the win column against its twin state rival for the first time since 2007 and the Cats recorded their first double overtime victory since 2010.
Â
The Catamounts came roaring out the gate with a pair of scoring opportunities in the opening five minutes. Less than a minute into the game,
Pleun Haantjes lined a shot from the top of the circle, but the attempt rolled too wide of the cage. Four minutes later,
Lauren Tucker tried to give UVM an early lead but had similar results as Haanjes with a wide attempt. Â
Â
As the clocked ticked under 10 minutes remaining in regulation, the Cats tried to take advantage of a penalty corner. Tucker received a feed in the circle but a UNH defender managed to get a stick on her shot to force the game into overtime.
In the first overtime period, the Green and Gold had a strong scoring chance on a penalty corner in the 73rd minute.
Taylor Gaines had her shot blocked in the circle by a Wildcat defender and
Olivia Hurd slapped the rebound on frame, but UNH goalie Kelsey Rudert (10 saves) made a diving save.
Â
Three minutes later, UVM's defense came through with a clutch stop on a UNH penalty corner. Ashley Mendonca ripped a line drive towards the cage, but Haantjes used her stick to make the defensive save.
Â
In double overtime, Phillips stole a pass near midfield and marched into the circle where she dribbled past Rudert. Phillips attempted to dish a cross, but a UNH defender deflected the pass into the cage for the walk-off score.Â
