BURLINGTON, Vt. - Maine's Brittany Smith scored her third goal of the season in the 59th minute to break the deadlock, and the Black Bears held on to win 1-0 over the Catamounts at Moulton-Winder Field on Senior Day Friday afternoon.
Maine improves to 12-4 on the year and 6-1 in America East play, while Vermont falls to 5-11 overall and 1-6 in conference play.

Four members of the class of 2018 were honored prior to the game for their contributions to the Vermont field hockey program.

Benwood made seven saves in the game, bringing her career total to 459. She is now 14 saves from tying Wendy Pouliot '89 for sixth all-time.

After a scoreless first half, both teams looked to break the deadlock with time winding down in the second half. With just under thirteen minutes remaining, Smith ripped a shot from Benwood's right that found its way through traffic and into the back of the net.

Vermont's best chance to tie the game came on a penalty corner with nine minutes remaining in the game. Junior
Lauren Tucker received the ball at the top of the circle, but her shot was turned away by Maine goaltender Emma Cochran.

The Catamounts pulled Benwood with just under six minutes remaining in the game for the extra attacker, but despite pressure on Maine's defense, they were unable to get a shot on goal and test Cochran. A green card issued to Vermont with 2:55 remaining in the contest took away the man advantage for two minutes. Maine called a timeout as the Vermont penalty ended, and managed to escape with the 1-0 victory.

UVM closes out the regular season Sunday (Oct. 29) with a trip to UMass Lowell to take on the River Hawks. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. with live video on AmericaEast.TV.Â
