Men’s Hoops Tops Boston University 87-66 in Hurricane Relief Game

FINAL: Vermont 87, Boston University 66
BURLINGTON, Vt. – In its first taste of the new season, the UVM men's basketball team defeated former America East rival Boston University 87-66 on Friday night at Patrick Gym. All proceeds from the game will go to hurricane relief efforts through the American Red Cross.

The Catamounts had offensive production coming from all angles as five players finished in double figures. Ernie Duncan led all scorers with 22 points on 6-of-9 shooting and drained four attempts from beyond the arc. Anthony Lamb and Payton Henson followed with 15 points apiece. Stef Smith added 12 points and Trae Bell-Haynes rounded out the attack with 11 points.
 
Boston University had a trio reach double digits, highlighted by Max Mahoney's team-high 16 points. Walter Whyte tallied 13 points and Tyler Canlon trailed with 10 points.  
 
The former conference rivals played a tight first half as the opening period saw nine lead changes. The Cats and Terriers traded baskets for most of the period and the Green and Gold went into the break with a slim 43-40 advantage.
 
In the second half, Duncan scored 19 of his 22 points as the Catamounts shot 61.9% (13-for-21) from the floor in the final frame. UVM's defense held its former league counterpart to 35.7% (10-for-28) shooting and forced 10 of BU's 16 turnovers in the period.
 
After opening the second half on a 7-0 run and boosting their lead to 50-40, the Catamounts blew the game open with a 19-10 run over a 10-minute stretch and enjoyed an 82-60 lead with less than five minutes left in the game.
