LAST TIME OUT | Bradley Highlights
UVM senior
Trae Bell-Haynes made the game-winning free throw with 2.6 seconds left on the clock and gave Vermont a 65-64 victory over Bradley on Friday afternoon in the opening round of the Islands of the Bahamas Showcase. The Green and Gold had four players in double figures as former high school teammates
Stef Smith and Bell-Haynes led the way with 14 points apiece. Smith was 4-of-6 from the field, including three makes from long range, and dished out three assists. Bell-Haynes dealt a game-high five assists and recorded three rebounds.
Payton Henson was one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, including four on the offensive glass.
Drew Urquhart added 10 points and five rebounds for the Cats off the bench.
MID-MAJOR POWER RANKINGS
After the strong showing in Lexington, the Catamounts remained at No. 3 in this week's CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 Poll. Vermont sits behind a pair of nationally ranked programs - No. 17 Gonzaga and No. 21 Saint Mary's (Calif.).
SCOUTING COASTAL CAROLINA
The Chanticleers come into the tournament with an even 1-1 record. Coastal Carolina reached the win column with a 102-50 rout of Piedmont International last Friday before falling to Lamar 66-60 on Tuesday. Coming into the season, CCU was tabbed seventh in the Sun Belt Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll and landed two Preseason All-Sun Belt Team selections – seniors Jaylen Shaw and Demario Beck. Shaw has averaged a team-high 15.5 points per game this year and he has made 60.0% (12-for-20) of his attempts from the floor. Juniors Ajay Sanders (10.5 ppg) and Matt Lindsey (10.0 ppg) have also averaged double figures through the first two games.
VERMONT VS. THE TOURNAMENT FIELD
The Catamounts have faced two of the seven other teams in this weekend's tournament – Iona and James Madison. UVM is 3-5 all-time against Iona but has won three out of the last five matchups dating back to 2004. The last meeting was back on Dec. 17, 2011 when the Gaels squeaked out a 73-72 win at Patrick Gym. In the only contest against JMU, the Cats lost 82-65 back on Dec. 5, 1981.
