"It was another hard fought battle with a very good UNH team," Head Coach
Jim Plumer said. "We simply have to manage the puck better in key situations in order to finish off games. Our goal tomorrow will be to play smart hockey for the whole game."
Just under halfway into the first period, New Hampshire's Nicole Dunbar picked up the puck behind the net and moved to the slot from Scobee's right. Her shot was stopped by Scobee, but the rebound kicked back out to the slot where Carlee Turner was able to put the puck into the back of the net to take the early lead.
Â
Ève-Audrey Picard picked up a Wildcat turnover and got the puck to
Kourtney Menches in the slot, who one-timed a shot over Ava Boutilier's right shoulder for the goal, her first of the season.
Â
Vermont killed a minute long two-man disadvantage during a three-minute long successful penalty kill starting about six minutes into the second. Halfway though the Catamounts second power play of the night, just over midway through the second,
Mackenzie MacNeil scored on the advantage to give Vermont the lead.
Sammy Kolowrat took a shot from the point that hit
Alyssa Gorecki in front of the net. The puck squirted to MacNeil's stick, and she was able to put it home for the UVM lead.
Â
UVM went into the second intermission leading 2-1. Scobee had 26 saves through the first two periods to keep the Wildcats to just the single goal. It was MacNeil's third goal of the season and 14th of her Catamount career.
Â
Both teams traded chances through the front half of the third period, with both goalies making solids saves at both ends of the ice. With under two minutes remaining, the Wildcats scored when a shot from Carlee Turner deflected off a UVM defender that got past Scobee for the equalizer.
Â
In the overtime period, the Wildcats controlled most of the play, but were unable to get a third goal past Scobee. The closest chance of the fourth period came when a UNH shot from the slot went off the post with just over 30 seconds remaining.
The Catamounts and Wildcats will play their third and final game of the season against each other at 4 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
