Vermont natives
Ian Weider (long jump) and
Ed Simon (pole vault) will compete in the NCAA East Preliminary Round this week at the University of Kentucky's Outdoor Track and Field Complex. Weider jumps on Thursday (May 25) at 4:30 p.m., while Simon vaults at 4:30 p.m. on Friday (May 26). The top-12 competitors in each event will advance to the 2017 NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon in early June.

CHASING GUTTERSON
Weider is roughly three inches away from Albert Gutterson's 1912 school record of 7.60 meters in the long jump. The Thetford Center native jumped 7.52 last year at the America East Championships in Vermont, while this year's top mark was 7.48 at Albany. He is seeded tied for 36th in the event this week in Kentucky. Weider is a three-time defending America East outdoor long jump champion, the first to achieve that feat since 2008-10.

VAULTING INTO THE RECORD BOOK
Simon has broken the outdoor school record in pole vault each of the last two weekends at the America East Championships and IC4A meet. He won his first outdoor conference title this year at UNH as the 2017 America East pole vault champion, clearing an even 5.00 meters to break Eric Gauthier's 1995 record before topping 5.10 to break his own mark. The Fairfax native is seeded tied for 28th in the event at NCAA prelims.Â

Anna Kaplan won the America East Elite 17 award, given to the student-athlete who best exemplifies academic excellence. Vermont finished sixth in the women's team standings (74) and the men's team placed seventh (71).
