The loss drops the Catamounts to 3-4 on the season and Holy Cross moves to an even 4-4.
Senior goalkeeper
Lena Benwood kept the Catamounts in the match with five saves. At the other end, Marcia LaPlante turned aside 10 shots to earn the victory.
Connolly's goal culminated a sequence that began near the right post with Suzanne Noone's possession. Amid a centering pass from Noone and a scramble in front of the cage, Connolly was able to quickly bury her eighth goal of the season.
As the first half wound to a close the Catamounts were awarded a corner and
Rachel Phillips put a shot on goal but the attempt would not go.
The second stanza saw the Catamounts earn cracks at the equalizer, but UVM would ultimately be unable to solve LaPlante. One of Vermont's better chances to even the score at one came with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation when
Landon Warren drove to the cage, but was denied when LaPlante dove to her right.
In the 66th minute Vermont replaced Benwood with a kicking back in
Lauren Tucker. UVM had one last chance at the equalizer with a penalty corner in the 69th minute, but Tucker's subsequent shot was blocked.
UVM did outshoot Holy Cross 18-13, including by a 10-6 margin on cage. The Catamounts also had the advantage in penalty corners 5-1.
Vermont next faces Bryant on Friday (Sept. 22) in a 1 p.m. match that will be played in East Providence, Rhode Island on the campus of Brown University.
