STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Vermont fell for the first time in conference play with an 80-57 loss at Stony Brook. The Catamounts are now 2-1 in the America East after winning consecutive conference games for the first time since the 2009-10 season (the last year that UVM made the NCAA Tournament).

There were eight lead changes in the first quarter, as
Cassidy Derda hit a trio three-point field goals early on. However, the Seawolves led 23-20 at the end of the opening period.
Starting at the 7:59 mark, UVM went on a 15-5 run to end the second quarter in order to take a 35-34 lead at halftime. The Catamounts went on that run despite zero three-point field goals in that period.Â

Stony Brook came out firing in the third quarter and went on a 23-4 right out of the gate. The Seawolves made all six of their three-point attempts in that period and took a commanding lead, which they would retain.Â

Both teams combined for just 21 points in the fourth quarter, as Stony Brook maintained the lengthy advantage in order to win its first conference game of 2017-18 (8-9, 1-3).

The Catamounts were led by
Cassidy Derda, who scored 12 points (4-9 3PT). Derda and
Katie Lavelle finished tied for the team-lead in rebounds with five each.Â
Hanna Crymble scored 10 points for UVM. The sophomore has no recorded double-figures scoring efforts in 14 of the 16 games that she has played in this season.
Off the bench, Haley Robertson scored nine points. Also,
Candice Wright recorded five blocks in a game for a third time this season. The UVM all-time leader now has 130 blocked shots for her career.Â

Shania Johnson led the way for Stony Brook with 24 points. Jerell Matthews was also a key contributor for the Seawolves with 20 points of her own.
Fouls were a big part of Saturday afternoon's game: Stony Brook committed 21, while Vermont was charged with 18.

As a team, UVM shot 35% from the field, 32% from downtown (6-19) and 65% at the free throw line (13-20). Meanwhile, Stony Brook finished at 54% from the floor, 63% from distance (12-19) and 60% at the foul line (6-10).

The Catamounts are now 5-11 overall, 1-6 on the road and 2-1 in America East play. Last season, Vermont finished with a 6-10 record in conference play.Â

Next up, Vermont stays on the road for one more game. The Catamounts head up to Maine for a meeting with the Black Bears on Monday afternoon (Jan. 15) at 1 p.m.
