BOSTON, Mass. – Kristina Shanahan tied the game at 1-1 with 8:04 remaining in the second period, but three Boston College goals before the start of the third period helped the Eagles defeat Vermont 6-1 on Saturday afternoon.

UVM finishes the season 10-20-5 overall with a 7-13-4 Hockey East regular season mark.

Boston College will advance to next weekend's Hockey East semifinal round, held at Northeastern's Matthews Arena.

Vermont did not capitalize on an early power play chance following a checking call against Bridget McCarthy just 1:24 into the first period.

The Eagles struck first as Ryan Little fired a puck through traffic into the slot. Erin Connolly initially whiffed on Little's pass, but managed to regain control of the puck and put one by the diving
Sydney Scobee.

BC held a 1-0 lead and 15-9 advantage in shots in the opening period. Scobee made 14 saves for Vermont while Burt stopped nine shots for Boston College.

Shanahan tied the game at 1-1 after a fast-paced first 12 minutes of the second period.
Daria O'Neill picked up a Boston College neutral zone turnover and feathered the puck along the left boards to
Ali O'Leary as she entered the BC zone. O'Leary centered the puck to Shanahan in the slot, who managed to fire a shot as she fell over Burt's glove.

After a single penalty called between both teams in the first, there were seven combined penalties in the final eight minutes of the second. Boston College struck three times in a two-and-a-half-minute span to grab a 4-1 lead.

Toni Ann Miano struck first on BC's second power play chance of the game 13:27 into the middle period. She carried the puck from the blue line to the top of the slot and fired a shot through traffic for the 2-1 lead.

Less than 90 seconds later Kenzie Kent managed to sneak the puck between Scobee and the left post to double the Eagle lead. Makenna Newkirk was credited with the primary assist and Miano was credited with the secondary.

BC scored its third goal in two and a half minutes with 4:03 left in the second. Newkirk fired a shot off a faceoff past Scobee to make it 4-1. Daryl Watts picked up the assist on the power play goal. Â

Scobee recorded 30 saves through two periods while Burt tallied 21 stops. Vermont was 0-for-3 on the advantage through two periods while the Eagles were 2-for-4 on power play chances.

UVM was unsuccessful on its fourth power play early in the third period after Newkirk was called for checking.
Ève-Audrey Picard was called for checking with 13:55 remaining in the third, but the Eagles could not find the back of the net.

With 11:07 to play, Flaherty was charged with a five-minute major and game misconduct for hitting from behind. Grace Bizal pushed the Eagle lead to 5-1 seven seconds later.

Newkirk made it 6-1 Boston College with 6:22 remaining. Neither team scored in the remaining minutes of the game and Boston College took a 6-1 final.

The Eagles were 4-for-7 on power play chances in the game while Vermont was 0-for-4. Scobee finished the game with 42 saves. Burt stopped 25 shots in the victory.
