CANTONSVILLE, Md. – Vermont's conference road finale saw the lead change hands eight times and the score was tied eight different times as UMBC outlasted UVM 16-14 on Saturday afternoon. The Catamounts drop to 4-10 overall and sit at 0-5 in the league standings. The Retrievers improve to 10-6 on the year and 2-3 in America East play. Â

Jenna Janes had a big day for the Catamounts with six points. The junior logged her fifth hat trick of the season and dished out two assists. She also picked up three ground balls, won two draw controls, and caused a turnover. Vermont had three players add two goals apiece –
Courtney Cole,
Elise Koehl, and
MacKenzie Bolt.
Maddy Kuras recorded 11 saves in goal.

Carolyn Jamison led the way for UMBC with six points on four goals and two assists. Payton Van Kirk followed with five goals on 11 shot attempts and scooped up four ground balls. Caitlin Miller contributed a hat trick and won nine draw controls. Kelsey Major earned the victory in goal and stopped three shots.

Janes split the defense with a spin move and scored the first goal of the afternoon four and a half minutes into the game. UMBC logged two goals in a 2:22 span but Janes countered at the 20-minute mark. UVM marched up the field with precision passing and Janes beat Major for her second score of the day.

After the Retrievers retook the lead, the Catamounts countered with goals from
Sabrina Tattersfield and Cole for a 4-3 advantage near the midway point of the first period. UMBC knotted the score up at 4-4 but
Elena McWright and Saneman converted free position opportunities for the Cats.

UMBC evened the score at 6-6 with 7:14 remaining in the half with scores from Van Kirk and Jamison. Koehl cut up the seam and scored the easy goal on UVM's next possession, then Janes completed the first-half hat trick under the four-minute mark and padded Vermont's lead to 8-6.

Van Kirk beat the clock with seven ticks left in the first half and cut the Cats' lead to 8-7 at the break.

The Catamounts opened the second half with a pair of goals in a 30-second span from Saneman and Bolt to stretch the advantage to 10-7. UMBC netted three unanswered goals and tied the game at 10-10 but
Alex Bernier gave UVM the lead once more. With some nifty stick work, the senior beat Major from the right side.

The Retrievers produced four goals in two minutes and took the lead for good with 17:20 left to play. Koehl scored her second goal of the day at 13:38 but UMBC stretched its lead to 16-12 late the half. The Cats tried to mount a late comeback with the final two goals of the contest, but could not tie the game before the clock hit all zeros.
