BURLINGTON, Vt. – Vermont women's hockey head coach
Jim Plumer has announced the hiring of UVM alum Alex Gettens '17 as an assistant coach on his staff. Gettens spent last season at the University of Maine following his time as a student assistant with the Catamounts.
"We are thrilled to welcome Alex back to UVM," said Plumer. "He is one of the best young coaches in the game and his knowledge, passion, and positive demeanor will be a huge asset to our program. I know he will be a great fit with our coaching staff and we will certainly be able to hit the ground running with someone who knows the way our program operates and has additional experience in Hockey East."
During his time at Maine, Gettens was involved in all aspects of the Black Bear program including practice, skill sessions, film sessions, pre-scout analysis, and recruiting. Gettens was also responsible for the logistical planning of all road trips, day-to-day equipment needs, and the coordination of team community service.
He and the Maine staff led the Black Bears to their most successful season in program history with 19 wins. Maine defeated Boston University in three games in the Hockey East Quarterfinals before suffering a loss to Northeastern in the semifinal. Head coach Richard Reichenbach was named Hockey East Coach of the Year following the historic season.
Gettens served as a student assistant with the Catamounts in 2016-17 and worked as the goalie coach, planning and conducting weekly goalie sessions. He was also an assistant to hockey operations at UVM from 2014-16.
During his collegiate career, Gettens worked as an intern coach at the USA Hockey U15 and U18 National Development Camps. He was also a girls assistant coach while attending St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire and won the 2015 New England Prep Championship.
