Bailey Matthews scored her first career goal in the 50th minute to bring Vermont to within one goal, but Monmouth (4-5) responded with a quick insurance goal and took a 3-1 win over Vermont (3-5) Friday afternoon on the Jersey Shore.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- UVM senior Landon Warren got the ball with space in Monmouth's circle in the opening minutes, but her shot towards Hawk goalie Gabi Millan (1 save) sailed wide to Millan's right.
- Georgia Garden Bachop slid a shot past a charging Espeland in the 28th minute to break a scoreless deadlock after receiving a pass in the circle from Kelly Hanna.
- After trading penalty corners to open the second half, Hanna found the back of the net to double Monmouth's lead in the 41st minute.
- Matthews scored her first career goal in the 50th minute to cut the lead to a single goal. Sophia Cheever brought the ball into the Monmouth circle in transition and fired a pass to Matthews for the goal.
- Less than a minute after Vermont's tally, Bachop added her second of the game to make it 3-1 with just under 20 minutes remaining.
- Monmouth held a 10-4 advantage in shots with a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. Each team had two penalty corners.
NEXT UP
Vermont continues south to Philadelphia for a Sunday match against the La Salle Explorers (3-5). The match is slated to begin at 12 p.m. at DeVincent Field.
