BURLINGTON, Vt. – Vermont junior goalie
Nick Washuta and freshman attackman
David Closterman picked up the first America East weekly awards for their performances against Utah and Navy to open the season. The conference announced the awards late Monday afternoon.
Washuta earned defensive player of the week honors and Closterman earned rookie of the week honors following Vermont's first two games of the 2019 season.
After leading the nation in save percentage last season, Washuta made nine saves in Vermont's 21-6 win over Utah last Friday, Feb. 1 in Salt Lake City. He added another seven saves in Vermont's 13-8 loss last Saturday (Feb. 9) at Navy.
Closterman recorded a hat trick in his first collegiate game at Utah, marking the fourth straight year a Vermont freshman has opened the season with a hat trick. He added a ground ball and caused turnover at Utah. Vermont scored 21 goals for the first time since 1994 in the win over Utah.
UVM opens the home schedule this Saturday (Feb. 16) as Holy Cross (0-1) visits Burlington for a meeting on Virtue Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. and will stream on CatamounTV.
