Schafzahl's four points came in the two victories over the Holy Cross Crusaders at Gutterson Fieldhouse for the Catamounts' first home sweep of the season. She opened the weekend by scoring the second goal of the game Friday (Feb. 15) in a 3-0 shutout victory. Schafzahl's offense continued in to Senior Night on Saturday (Feb. 16) when she opened the scoring 1:32 into the game. The rookie forward added two assists minutes later in the first period on a pair of goals by
Kristina Shanahan.
She led all Hockey East rookies in scoring last week and had the highest points-per-game (2.00) by a rookie in the country over that period. Schafzahl is in a tie for eighth in the conference for rookie scoring (16 points) and second in game-winning goals (2) in the 2018-19 campaign. She also has the fourth-most shots on goal (90) by a rookie in the league.
Her 16 points on the season put her second on Vermont in scoring. She's registered seven goals to tie her with
Ève-Audrey Picard and
Kristina Shanahan for the second-most goals by a Catamount. Schafzahl has already recorded the second-most points by a rookie forward at UVM in the last five seasons.
A native of Weiz, Austria, Schafzahl earns the first Hockey East weekly honor of her career and the fourth by a Catamount this season. Blue liners
Maude Poulin-Labelle and
Sini Karjalainen were named Rookie of the Week in February and December, respectively, and
Blanka Škodová won Defensive Player of the Week in early November. Karjalainen also won Rookie of the Month in December.
Vermont closes out the regular season Saturday (Feb. 23) in a pivotal game on the road against the Maine Black Bears. The two squads battle it out for the final spot in the Hockey East playoffs as the Catamounts currently hold a one-point lead over Maine for eighth in the conference. Puck drop is slated for 2 p.m. at Alfond Arena.
