Game Notes: Vermont
WHAT A RUN!
UVM had its historic 24-game regular season conference road winning streak come to an end at UMBC on Thursday night. The streak was the second-longest active in the country behind only Gonzaga (29 games) and lasted 1,109 days. The 24-game run doubled the previous America East record of 12 games, set by Boston University from 2003-05, and the Cats had a 15.4 average margin of victory.
FEWEST CONFERENCE LOSSES
Despite Thursday's setback, Vermont has only surrendered three regular season league games since 2016-17 - the second fewest in the country behind Gonzaga's two West Coast Conference losses.
BOUNCING BACK
The Catamounts haven't lost back-to-back regular season games since December of 2017. Vermont is 5-0 this season following a loss and has won by an average of 25.2 points. UVM has not suffered consecutive league setbacks since early February of 2016 (UAlbany and UMass Lowell – 50 games).
BEST 27-GAME STARTS
After 27 games, the Catamounts are off to a 21-6 start or better for the third time under Cioffi Men's Basketball Head Coach
John Becker and the sixth-time in school history. In the previous five starts, Vermont has qualified for either the NCAA Tournament (2016-17 and 2004-05) or the NIT (2017-18, 2010-11, 2006-07).
EMPIRE STATE OF MIND
Since the start of the 2016-17 season, Vermont is 23-1 against schools located in New York. The run includes non-conference victories over Marist, Hofstra, Siena, and St. Bonaventure while topping league rivals UAlbany, Binghamton, and Stony Brook.
SCOUTING BINGHAMTON
The Bearcats have won two of their last three games and currently reside in the No. 7 spot of the America East standings. Binghamton has swatted away 134 shots this season, the most in the league, and has recorded 41 blocks during conference play - the third most behind Stony Brook (57) and Vermont (47). Sam Sessoms ranks third in America East with a 19.6 conference scoring average. The Binghamton newcomer is a six-time Rookie of the Week honoree and has averaged 21.0 points per game since last month's meeting in Burlington. Caleb Stewart sits in the top-10 with 14.2 points per game against league foes and has scored 16-plus in three out of his last four outings.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Vermont has cruised through the all-time series against Binghamton with a 31-8 record. UVM has won seven straight and 17 of the last 19 overall. During
John Becker's tenure, the Cats are 13-2 against the Bearcats. The Cats' season sweep last year had historical significance – the 68-54 win in Vestal gave the Green and Gold their 320th regular season conference victory, an America East all-time record, then UVM clinched its eighth regular season title with a 75-54 victory in Burlington. Last month, the Catamounts rolled to a 78-50 win at Patrick Gym.
