STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The UMBC Retrievers had three players tally four goals to take a 14-13 win over the Vermont Catamounts in the America East Championship Game on Saturday at LaValle Stadium.
 
UMBC will play in the 2019 NCAA Tournament as the America East Champion.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Vermont jumped to a 5-3 lead at the end of the first quarter with a pair of goals from David Closterman and Ben French. Alex Semler was charged with an illegal stick after Vermont's fifth goal and was assessed a three-minute non-releasable penalty.
• UMBC's Trevor Patschorke tallied consecutive goals early in the second quarter to give the Retrievers a 6-5 lead. From there, Vermont tallied four straight goals to end the half with a 9-6 lead. Closterman added Vermont's fifth straight goal at the start of the third quarter to make it 10-6.
• UMBC ended the third quarter with three goals to bring the Catamount lead back to one. The run was capped by Ryan Frawley's goal as the horn sounded to end the quarter.
• The Retrievers opened the fourth quarter with a pair of goals to take their first lead of the game. French tallied his fourth goal of the game to tie the game at 11-11 with 7:21 to play.
• UMBC pushed its lead to 12-11 and 13-12, but Vermont's Thomas McConvey managed to bring the score back to even with two goals in response.
• Patschorke netted his fourth of the game with 1:06 to play in the fourth quarter to give UMBC a 14-13 lead. A penalty was assessed to Vermont despite the UMBC goal, and the Retrievers won the final faceoff and killed the clock for the win.

GAME NOTES

• UMBC was 2-for-4 on man-up situations while the Cats did not receive an EMO.
• Closterman and French both finished the game with four goals. Closterman added two assists and finished with a season-best six points.
• Sal Iaria finished the game with three assists, matching a career-high.
• The Class of 2019 will graduate in a few weeks as the winningest class in program history. The 12-man class made three trips to the conference championship game.
