STARTING OFF RIGHT
Vermont won its season opener over the weekend for the second year in a row after beating Merrimack 19-11 on the road. The Cats had four players record a hat trick as the offensive attack was guided by Large. The sophomore set a career high with six points on four goals and two assists. She won four draw controls and picked up one ground ball. Vasile also scored a hat trick and McLaughlin made six saves to earn her first career win.
SCOUTING COLGATE
Like the Cats, the Raiders won their season opener with a 14-9 victory against Marist last Saturday behind a strong second half push. Danielle Van Calcar collected Patriot League Midfield of the Week honors after logging a seven-point performance against the Red Foxes. Eliza Soutter was named to the Patriot League Rookie of the Week Honorable Mention as the newcomer netted four goals on Marist. Coming into the season, Colgate was picked sixth in Patriot League Preseason Coaches' Poll. Van Calcar also landed on the Preseason All-League Team. In goal, Samantha Croston recorded 15 saves in last weekend's win.
INSIDE THE SERIES
The Raiders have controlled the all-time series 20-11, but the Cats have made a strong push in recent years. Vermont has won four out of the last seven matchups. During the seven-year run, the non-conference foes met in the first game of the year five times. In last year's season opener, the Catamounts held off a late rally by the Raiders for a 12-9 victory on the road.
