Stefanos Lekkas picked up his 12th career Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honor following Vermont's weekend sweep over 12th-ranked Northeastern at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Lekkas stopped 31-of-33 shots faced in Friday's 4-2 win over the Huskies, outdueling Northeastern's Craig Pantano (30 saves). On Saturday's Senior Night, Lekkas needed to make just 22 saves in UVM's 3-1 win over Northeastern.
In total, Lekkas stopped 53-of-56 shots faced to finish the weekend with a .946 save percentage. He allowed just three goals to finish with a 1.50 goals against average.
The Elburn, Illinois native entered the weekend ranked ninth in NCAA history in career saves with 3,816. He finished the weekend with 3,869 saves and currently ranks seventh in NCAA history. He is 31 saves shy of passing Rick Heinz (Minnesota-Duluth '78) for sole possession of fifth in college hockey history.
In Catamount Country, Lekkas ranks second in career saves behind UVM Hall-of-Famer Tim Thomas '97. Thomas ranks third in NCAA history with 3,950 career saves. Lekkas is second in UVM history with 133 career games played, behind only Thomas' 140 career games played.
With the pair of wins against the Huskies, Lekkas now has 45 career victories. He passed Tom Draper '87 (44 wins) and moved into a tie for fourth in program history with Dave Reece '71.
Lekkas and the Catamounts close the 2019-20 season this Thursday (Mar. 5) at ninth-ranked UMass (20-11-2, 13-8-2 HEA). The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m. at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Massachusetts.
