INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Jeff Schulman, the director of athletics at the University of Vermont, has been appointed to the Division I Men's Ice Hockey Committee, effective September 1, 2020. He will have a four-year term representing the Hockey East Association, replacing Steve Metcalf, the league's current commissioner, whose term is set to expire.
A 1989 Vermont graduate, Schulman was a four-year letter-winner as a defenseman for the Catamounts prior to being selected by the Boston Bruins in the 1989 NHL supplemental draft. He was also a member of the institution's first NCAA Tournament team in school history in 1988.
The Buffalo, New York native has plenty of previous experience working on NCAA committees, serving on the National Collegiate Women's Ice Hockey Committee for four years, including two years as chair of the committee. In addition, he was a five-year member of the Division I Women's Soccer Committee.
"As a former NCAA ice hockey player, I am extremely excited for this opportunity to join the Division I men's committee," Schulman said. "It is truly an honor and I look forward to the working with the other five committee members to help advance collegiate ice hockey and make the Division I Men's Ice Hockey championship the best it can be."
Prior to becoming the director of athletics, Schulman served as an assistant director of athletics from 1993-2002 at Vermont before being promoted to senior associate athletics director. Before his time in Burlington, Schulman started his administrative career as an intern in the ECAC league office before moving on to become an assistant athletics director at Bates College for four years.
The current members of the Division I Men's Ice Hockey Committee in addition to Metcalf include Mike Corbett, former hockey coach, University of Alabama Huntsville; Michael Cross, assistant athletic director, Pennsylvania State University; Mike Kemp, senior associate athletic director, University of Nebraska Omaha; Derek Schooley, head coach, Robert Morris University; and Mike Shafer, head coach, Cornell University.
