COACH'S QUOTE
"All season long this team's ability to respond after we are scored on has been there and I felt again today we were knocking on the door right to the very end of the match," head coach
Kate Pfeifer said. "This will be a tough week of preparation [for Maine]. We will have to do a better job with our passing game and really capitalize on our special teams."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Golden Bears opened the scoring early getting on the board just 2:29 into the contest. Maddie Cleat converted on a penalty corner from the top of the shooting circle. Her hard-low shot went just inside the far post beating UVM's Sierra Espeland. Claire Hind picked up an assist on the tally, her first career point.
- UVM had 14 corner opportunities, including four in each of the last three quarters but couldn't convert. Several opportunities just missed the post.
- Cal got a much-needed insurance marker with 5:33 left in the third quarter. An aerial entry by the Catamounts was intercepted around midfield and the ball was fired forward to Maddie Cleat. Cleat made a move past a Vermont defender and fired a backhand past an onrushing Espeland to make it 2-0.
- Cal goalkeeper Cato Knipping earned her fourth shutout of the season, making six saves on the afternoon.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- First year forward Alina Gerke had a game-high nine shots in the contest.
- This afternoon was the first time UVM had been shutout since its conference opener against Stanford on September 24. The Catamounts averaged 2.5 goals per game in their four contests before today.
