COACH'S QUOTE
"We knew it was going to be a tough match today and think our team stuck to the game plan for 60 minutes," head coach
Kate Pfeifer said. "I am super proud of how we responded after Maine scored its goal. I think it showed the level of intention and purpose that we had on the field today."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UVM opened the scoring late in the first half. Sophia Drees played a nice pass to Clodagh Ferry at the top of the circle. Ferry made one defender miss and then fired a low backhand that squeezed through traffic and into to the goal. It was her ninth of the season.
- Maine answered and tied the game at one shortly after the halftime break. Chloe Walton's backhand flick hit the right post and caromed to the stick of Brooke Sulinski who played the ball out of the air and off of UVM keeper Sierra Espeland.
- Just 42 seconds later, Alina Gerke bolted into the circle for the Catamounts and found herself with time just outside the right post. She tucked a shot under the blocker of Mia Borley and restored UVM's one-goal lead.
- Espeland had to come up with a huge play at the start of the fourth to preserve the lead. A Maine attacker broke through the Catamount back line forcing Espeland off of her's and she made a sprawling stick stop to knock the ball away.
- Ferry added the insurance with just nine minutes to play. Puck Kwaspen gathered the ball after an errant stick-stop on a penalty corner and found Ferry wide open on the left wing. The senior captain made no mistake on her tenth of the season and gave Vermont a 3-1 lead.
