COACH'S QUOTE
"Some parts of the game we liked tonight and lots of parts we need to get better at," Head Coach
Todd Woodcroft said. "There is a reason UML is a top-15 team. They play a hard, veteran smart game. We have to match that tomorrow."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UMass Lowell graduate student Connor Sodergren opened the scoring for the River Hawks 5:48 into the first period. Nick Austin fired a shot from distance that hit the post and bounced back out in front of UVM's net. Sodergren was able to tap it home before UVM's Gabe Carriere or the defense could adjust. It was his second goal of the season.
- The River Hawks leading scorer Andre Lee doubled the lead on the power play 5:39 into the second period. From behind the net Matt Crasa teed up a one-timer in the slot for Lee who deposited his tenth of the year past Carriere.
- With 30.4 seconds left in the second period the Catamounts earned a five-on-three power play over the next 1:49 of game action split between the second and third period. The River Hawks defenders blocked everything in front and kept UVM to just two shots on the power play opportunity.
- With 12:26 to go in regulation the Catamounts appeared to have cut the River Hawks lead in a half with deflection in front of Savory by UVM's Jacques Bouquot. The officials initially ruled that Bouquot redirected the puck with a high stick and after reviewing the play upheld that decision.
- With a late power play opportunity UVM pulled Carriere for a six-on-four advantage. But the River Hawks clogged the lanes and Marek Korencik converted on an unassisted empty-netter from the Lowell defensive zone to ice the opening game of this weekend series.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- In Vermont's last four games Carriere has stopped 120 of the 125 shots he's faced a .960 save percentage. UVM is 3-3-2 this season in games Carriere starts.
- Andre Lee's power play marker was the first time UVM had allowed a goal while down a skater in its last five games.
- 13 of Vermont's 19 skaters Friday night blocked at least one shot. Azzaro Tinling, Cory Babichuk and Robbie Stucker led the way with two blocked shots apiece.
- Babichuk also led the Catamounts with four shots on goal and was named the third star of the contest.
