COACH'S QUOTE
"To earn the corner and bury it was just exactly what you want to see happen in overtime," head coach
Kate Pfeifer said. "I thought they did an excellent job being patient and making their opportunities count today. Kudos to these first years who are stepping in and just playing huge roles for us and understanding the value of these moments, they're able to execute and finish right when it matters. For us to be able to rise above and again respond after being scored on to come back and win it in overtime is going to be really important experience for the group and hopefully we can ride this one into another win."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two teams played a very defensive first half. The only shot on goal was padded aside by UVM's Sierra Espeland with 10:13 left in the second quarter. Neither team earned a corner and they headed to halftime tied at zero.
- Vermont quickly took the game to Hofstra in the second half. The Pride's Lara Borensztein made two saves in the opening 40 seconds of the half on Kate Hall and Reggie Hillery.
- UVM broke the deadlock 5:03 into the third quarter after earning the first two corners of the afternoon. Borensztein made an initial save on a Clodagh Ferry backhand but the rebound was stashed home through traffic by Alina Gerke for her second goal of the season.
- The Pride equalized with 4:28 left in the third stanza. Eline Oldeman intercepted a UVM clearing attempt and was fouled just outside of the shooting circle. After a quick restart, she fired a perfect backhand shot that snuck in the far post to tie things up.
- Espeland made two key saves in the final 2:12 of regulation to push the Catamounts to overtime for the first time this season.
- 2:54 into the extra session the Catamounts earned a corner. Ferry started the play for Vermont and Puck Kwaspen settled the ball for Drees. Drees then rifled a shot through Borensztein legs for the winner.
