BURLINGTON, Vt. – Stanford scored the only goal of the game with five seconds left in the third quarter and held on to earn its first shutout of the season as they defeated Vermont 1-0 in both teams America East opener from Moulton Winder Field Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinal held most of the possession in a defensive first half. Sierra Espeland made two saves for UVM keeping Stanford at bay. The Catamounts earned one corner in the first half and Stanford's Caroline Guden made a key defensive stop on UVM's Clodagh Ferry.
- With five seconds left in the third quarter the Cardinal scored the only goal of the contest. Molly Redgrove fired a shot from 90 feet out towards Espeland that was redirected high and in by Stanford's Haley Mossmer to make it 1-0. It was Mossmer's team leading third goal of the season.
- Vermont's best chance for an equalizer came with 4:12 left in regulation. In traffic Alina Gerke cut to the middle and slid a shot towards goal the went just inches wide.
- UVM played the final 2:04 with a pulled goalie pressing for the equalizer. The Catamounts earned a final corner opportunity with 24 seconds in regulation but were called for a foul on the ensuing play.

- Today was the Catamounts fifth all-time meeting with the Cardinal but the first at UVM's Moulton Winder Field.
