"I am so pleased that Jane prepared herself so well for this season," said head coach
Matt Belfield. "She has consistently worked hard and trusted the development process. Her confidence in herself is growing and the ability to lead this past race from start to finish is a wonderful thing."
Leighton earns the first weekly honor of her cross country career. The Amherst, New Hampshire native logged a personal-best time of 17:55.40 in the 5k at Hard'Ack Recreation Area. Leighton raced to a 17.7-second margin of victory in the season-opening meet for the first win of her career.
The senior was selected captain by her Vermont teammates prior to the start of the 2021 campaign. Leighton and the Catamounts return to action on September 18 for the UNH Pre-Conference Meet in Durham, New Hampshire. The event, which kicks off at 12 p.m. will be a preview of the 2021 America East Cross Country Championship course.
