COACH'S QUOTE
"We are getting closer to our compete game," Head Coach Todd Woodcroft said. "These hard-fought, grinding games were the ones that eluded us last season but we found a way to win tonight. Gabe Carriere was a star - he performed like the elite goalie we know he is. It will be a quick turnaround until tomorrow and we can expect some some fresh legs in the lineup."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Catamounts opened the scoring with 4:06 left in the first period. William Lemay forced a turnover near the UVM blueline and he flipped the puck into the neutral zone. Andrei Buyalsky was the first to the puck and he broke in alone on Colgate's Carter Gylander. Buyalsky snuck a wicked wrist under the glove of Gylander for his first career collegiate goal.
  • In the second period the Raiders pushed hard for an equalizer at one point earning a 36-second five-on-three advantage. Vermont held Colgate without a shot over the power play stretch and then struck for the eventual game winner. Eric Gotz pressured a Raiders forward in the zone and forced a turnover. Jacques Bouqout played the puck up to Isak Walther fresh out of the penalty box. Walther blew past Colgate's defense to the outside before cutting to the middle and beating Gylander with a backhand for his second goal of the season.
  • With 8:10 to play in the third period Colgate cut the Vermont lead in half with a shorthanded tally. In transition, the Raiders' Pierson Brandon was able to get a backhand shot away that Carriere padded aside, but Brandon was able to center the rebound from behind the net and Ross Mitton stepped into a wrist shot that beat Carriere.
  • Down the stretch Carriere made five saves to close the door on any comeback attempt from Colgate. With less than a second left in the contest he robbed Colgate's Nick Anderson on a scramble play in front of the net.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Tonight, was the sixth time in Carriere's career he has made 30 or more saves.
  • This evening was Vermont's first win in Hamilton since November 16, 1996, a 5-4 triumph for the Catamounts. Eric Hallman '97 set a UVM record for goals in a game by a defenseman with four that night.
  • With tonight's 2-1 win, Community Bank N.A. will donate $150 to Special Olympics Vermont. Community Bank, N.A. donates $75 per goal to Special Olympics Vermont for every goal the men's and women's team scores this season.
