COACH'S QUOTE
"We had an excellent start to the game and played to the identity we are trying to find," said Head Coach
Todd Woodcroft. "We didn't learn a lesson from recent games regarding penalty trouble and we got behind again with poor penalty kill performance. We will not win when opponents have power play success like UMASS had tonight. Back to work tomorrow."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After an even first period the Minutemen opened the scoring with 1:42 left in the first period. UVM got caught in the UMass zone and the puck broke the other way on a three-on-one. Reed Lebster tapped home a cross-crease feed from Cal Kiefiuk for his seventh goal of the season.
- UMass doubled its advantage on the power play 2:37 into the second. Matthew Kessel fired a point shot through traffic that Vermont's Gabe Carriere never saw.
- In the final five minutes of the second period the Minutemen put four goals past Vermont including a buzzer-beater with .6 seconds left in the period.
- Aaron Bohlinger picked up UMass' fourth power play goal of the game 9:06 into the third period.
- UVM's Timofei Spitserov responded for the Catamounts just 22 seconds later. Cutting into the slot Spitserov beat Matt Murray with a wicked wrist shot for his second goal of the season. Cody Schivaon and Nic Hamre assisted on the Spitserov tally.
- After a final UMass tally William Lemay closed out the scoring with his fifth goal of the season. In transition Joe Leahy took the puck to the net and after Murray made the initial stop Lemay put home the rebound.
