BURLINGTON, Vt. – Women's hockey senior
Theresa Schafzahl was named Division I Women's Most Valuable Player by the New England Hockey Writers Association Tuesday afternoon. The New England Hockey Writers Association will host an awards reception on Thursday, May 5, at the Prince Restaurant in Saugus, MA.
The event will be a reunion of the New England hockey community, starting with food and beverage at 6 p.m., with the awards presentation to begin at 7 p.m. Cost of the reception is $40 per person. Anyone interested in attending the event should contact Joe Bertagna at j2b2hockey@gmail.com.
Schafzahl rewrote the UVM record book this season setting new single-season marks with 25 goals and 46 points. Her 1.58 points per game in was fifth in the NCAA this season. Schafzahl appeared in 21 regular season games in Hockey East play for Vermont, leading the conference with 21 goals and 39 points. Her 1.86 points per game was second-best among all league players. She netted three game-winning goals in league play and converted at a shooting rate of 21.6%. The Weiz, Austria, native potted seven of her 21 tallies while on the power-play.
She was also first player in program history to receive the Cammi Granato Award as Hockey East Player of the Year. Schafzahl was also crowned the Hockey East Scoring Champion and PNC Bank Three Stars Award Winner, as well as the sole unanimous First Team All-Hockey East selection. She was also named to the Patty Kazmaier Top-10 and a First Team All-American, both program firsts.
Senior defenseman
Maude Poulin-Labelle joined Schafzahl as a New England Division I Women's All-Star. Poulin-Labelle became the first Catamount to be named Hockey East's Best Defenseman. She shared the honor with Northeastern defender Skylar Fontaine. She ranked third amongst all NCAA defenseman with 35 points (13G, 22 A) in 34 games. She was named Hockey East Defender of the Month in December and January. She also set a program record with six points in a single game at Holy Cross on January 18.
