COACH'S QUOTE
"Cornell deserves the credit for tonight's win," said Head Coach
Jim Plumer. "They got off to a strong start and put us on our heels and fortunately
Tara Bach kept us in the game in the first period. We had a strong response in the second and it was great to see Linnéa Misner get her first goal as a Catamount. Tomorrow we've got to stay out of the penalty box and find the level that we had played for the first two weekends."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cornell struck first 16:28 into the opening frame while on the power play, seeing Piper Grober secure her first goal on the campaign. It was the first time this season Vermont trailed and the first time UVM conceded a power play goal. Jill McLaughlin was awarded an assist on the Big Red's opening tally.
- Bach stood tall in the first period making 15 total saves before the first intermission.
- The Catamounts knotted the score at 1-1 while on the power play 11:11 into the middle frame, seeing Stella Retrum and Josie Hemp wheel the puck around to Linnéa Misner at the point, rifling a low shot to the bottom right corner, securing her first goal as a Catamount, securing the equalizing goal.
- Cornell answered back relatively quickly, scoring 40 seconds later thanks to Shannon Pearson scoring her first goal of the season, regaining the lead 11:51 into the second period, 2-1.
- The Big Red scored again on the power play 7:37 into the third period when Grober tallied her second goal of the game, extending Cornell's lead to 3-1.
- Vermont stayed in the battle, finding its second goal of the game 14:34 into the final period when Hilary Wilkin found a loose puck in the slot, using a slap shot to beat Annelies Bergmann to the top left corner, recording her team-high third goal of the season, cutting the Big Red deficit in half. Sophia DeAnzeris and Zoe Charland were each awarded assists on the goal to make the score 3-2 in favor of Cornell.
- A late penalty on Cornell with just 25 seconds of regulation remaining gave Vermont a chance to tie the game, but the Big Red defense stood tall, taming the Catamount push. Cornell skated away with the 3-2 win in its season opener from Lynah Rink.
