Women’s Hockey and #7 Minnesota Duluth Concludes Opening Weekend Series in Overtime

FINAL SCORE (OT): Vermont 2, #7 Minnesota Duluth 3
BURLINGTON, Vt. – 60 minutes of regulation wasn't enough to decide a winner between Vermont (1-1-0) and No. 7 Minnesota Duluth (3-1-0) on Saturday afternoon from Gutterson Fieldhouse during UVM's TD Home Opener, but in the end the Bulldogs skated away with the 3-2 win scoring exactly one minute into the overtime period.

COACH'S QUOTE
"Obviously it was disappointing to not get the result today, but I could not be more proud of this team for the way we played this entire weekend," said Head Coach Jim Plumer. "We really battled through some adversity today and the way we played in the third period was as good as we can possibly play. There's a lot to build on a lot to be proud of and really looking forward to seeing this team continue to improve and to play at a high level."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Similar to the first game in the series, the Catamounts pounced on the scoreboard first 12:22 into the opening period. While playing four-on-four, Rose-Marie Brochu worked the puck over to Sophia DeAnzeris on the far side of the point. DeAnzeris rifled a shot towards goal, but the puck deflected off a Bulldog defender, popping out to Natalie Zarcone who sniped the top left corner, earning her first goal of the season propelling UVM ahead 1-0. It was the first goal Bulldog goaltender Eve Gascon conceded this season.
  • Minnesota Duluth responded, seeing Josie St. Martin score her first goal of the season to knot the game at 1-1 with 2:13 of the first period remaining.
  • Following a scoreless second period that saw Tara Bach make seven saves, Vermont scored 2:52 into the third period when Linnéa Misner executed a breakout pass to Zoe Charland, who quickly dished a pass to Hilary Wilkin who was to her left side. Wilkin carried the puck into the zone, unleashing a wicked snapshot to the top right corner, securing her first career goal, putting the Catamounts ahead 2-1.
  • The Bulldogs bounced back just under four minutes later when Caitlin Kraemer notched her fourth goal of the season finding the bottom right corner, knotting the contest at 2-2.
  • The Catamounts rallied off eight more shots on goal throughout the remainder of regulation, but Gascon stood tall, saving all eight attempts from UVM, ultimately sending the bout to overtime.
  • Minnesota Duluth was able to score the go-ahead goal exactly one minute into the overtime period courtesy of St. Martin scoring her second goal of the game, winning 3-2.
