Women’s Lacrosse Second Quarter is the Difference in Amherst; Falls 17-10 at UMass

FINAL SCORE: UMass 17, Vermont 10
AMHERST, MA. – Vermont (1-1) got ahead 4-0 early on UMass (2-1) on Saturday afternoon from Garber Field, but an 11 unanswered goal surge from the Minutewomen propelled them to a 17-10 victory over the Catamounts on home turf.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jane Trauger opened scoring with 13:30 on the clock in the opening frame while Vermont was a woman-up, sniping the top left corner with a right-handed shot, earning the Catamounts an early 1-0 lead.
  • UMass had a chance to respond a little over one minute later when Kassidy Morris had a free position shot opportunity, but Anna Rosenberger stood her ground, making her first save of the game to keep UVM ahead 1-0.
  • Trauger scored once again with 9:28 on the clock in the first quarter, making it 2-0 in favor of UVM.
  • The sister combo of Lauren Lefebvre and Lindsay Lefebvre extended Vermont's unanswered scoring streak to 4-0, adding a goal each as the Catamounts took a four-goal lead with 7:21 remaining in the opening frame.
  • Vermont was forced to take a timeout with 1:23 remaining in the first quarter after UMass was able to orchestrate a 4-0 scoring run of their own led by a hat trick from Morris. The score was knotted at 4-4 following the first 15 minutes of play.
  • UMass carried the offensive surge they created during the second half of the first quarter into the second quarter, scoring five unanswered goals to gain a 9-4 advantage heading into halftime with a five-goal lead.  
  • Following two opening goals from UMass to begin the third quarter, Trauger scored her hat trick goal with 10:25 on the clock during a free position opportunity, securing her seventh goal of the season to cut the deficit to six, down 11-5.
  • Caitlin Haggerty scored her fourth goal of the season with 7:26 remaining in the third frame, making the score 12-6 in favor of UMass. Lauren Lefebvre earned an assist on Vermont's sixth goal.
  • Ali Cabot and Haggerty dialed up two more goals for Vermont as the Catamounts attempted to cut the deficit, bringing UVM within four, 12-8.
  • Lil Hancock concluded scoring in the third quarter for UMass, taking a 13-8 lead into the final frame of play.
  • Lydia Doraz got scoring started in the fourth quarter, scoring her fifth goal of the season after finessing her way around numerous UMass defenders, pinning the top left corner. UMass maintained the lead, 13-9.
  • Haggerty notched her second consecutive hat trick of the season with 8:58 remaining in regulation, but UMass responded with three unanswered goals to close out the game, walking away with the 17-10 win over UVM on home turf.
 
INSIDE THE BOX
  • Haggerty tied a game-high four points scoring three goals and one assist while corralling one ground ball.
  • Trauger tallied her second hat trick in just as many games to begin the season to go along with a team-high seven shots.
  • Doraz recorded one goal and one assist while adding five shots, one ground ball, one caused turnover and one draw control.
  • Cabot also registered one goal and one assist and notched one caused turnover.
  • Lindsay Lefebvre scored her first goal of the season against UMass on Saturday.
 
UP NEXT
The Catamounts will return home to play their first game of a six game homestand, starting on Tuesday (Feb. 17), welcoming Iona to Virtue Field for Vermont's home opener. Faceoff is scheduled for 10 a.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
