COACH'S QUOTE
"Our teams had a good day for sure," said Head Coach Matt Belfied. "We scored more points than we were seeded for on both sides and got a couple extra people through to finals for tomorrow. So lovely for Emma to get the javelin title. It was a long road back and she finally got her victory at America East. Big points from the distance folks with a bunch of UVM top-ten marks…shows that we are doing the right things for sure. Great hurdle race for Ryleigh and our Decathletes and Heptathlete fought through some rough conditions for a good Day one. We will dry off and get some rest for tomorrow."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wapshare's win earned Vermont 10 points and the winning toss came on her first attempt.
- She is the first Catamount to win the javelin throw since 2014 (Nika Ouellette). At 47.83m it is Wapshare's best throw by .01m, a mark she set this spring at the Triton Invitational.
- Patrick Mozden earned the first points for the Vermont men of the day with a sixth place finish in the 3000 steeplechase. Mozden (9:14.41) picked up three points while Bennett Harrison-Michaels earned two with a seventh place finish at 9:15.38. Both Catamounts were multiple seconds quicker than their time at the Ken O'Brien Pre-Championship meet.
- On the women's side of the 3000 steeplechase Hope Tyska grabbed a top-five and four points in fifth at 11:08.30, her quickest time of the spring season and eighth in program history.
- In a neck and neck battle between Catamounts, Tommy Wolfe (30:33.44) finished seventh and William Locke (30.33.45) in eighth in the men's 10k. Wolfe earned two points by beating his teammate by .01 seconds. Both Catamounts made their move in the 23rd lap of 25 total with the quickest times in the field on that lap to move into point scoring position.
- Wolfe's time puts him fourth fastest in the Catamount record books with Locke now in fifth.
- Jackson King sits at 3129 points and in fifth place in the Decathalon after day one. Luke Miller is in sixth with 3123 points.
- To wrap up the day Caroline Deiss finished in fifth in the women's 10k at 35:19.20 to pick up four more points and is now sixth fastest in program history. Siena Stanley added two more finishing in seventh at 35:29.62 for eighth in the UVM record book.
- Will Just got the qualifiers for Sunday started by earning his ticket to the finals in the 1500m. Just finished in third in the second heat with a 3:52.22 time to advance.
- Three Catamounts in the women's 1500m advanced with Bella Fryer finishing second in her heat at 4:40.82. In the same heat Grace Delisle finished in third at 4:42.38 which was amongst the times quick enough to move on. Alex Beal had the fastest time of the bunch at 4:40.60 so despite a fourth place finish in her heat Beal was fast enough to qualify for Sunday.
- Ryleigh Garrow posted a personal best finish in the women's 100m hurdles. She won her heat in 14.36 seconds.
- The reigning champion in the women's 800m Rachel Barba opened her Championships with a 2:11.69 in the 800m qualifiers. Her 2:11.69 was the fastest time in the field.
- Erin Carty finished in second place in her heat and advanced to the finals in the women's 400m hurdles at 1:02.81.
- Andres Santiago moved on in the men's 400m hurdles prelims. He finished in third in his heat at 55.55 seconds.
