Field Hockey Ties Program Record for Most Goals in a Game With 9-0 Victory Over LIU

FINAL SCORE: Vermont 9, LIU 0

BURLINGTON, Vt. — Vermont (4-1) defeated LIU (0-4), 9-0, Friday afternoon on Salute to Service Day at Moulton Winder Field. The nine goals tied a program record for most goals in a game, while six different Catamounts found the back of the net in the victory over the Sharks.

"The team was inspired by the first responders on the sideline today," said Head Coach Kate Pfeifer. "It can be difficult to play on 9/11, and their presence made a huge difference. This was a great team win, and I continue to be impressed by the variety in our attack production." 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • With 24 seconds remaining in the first quarter, Addie DelOrefice scored the first goal of the game for the Catamounts off an assist from Isi McMahon.

  • In the final seconds of the first quarter, Maddy Weaver doubled the Catamounts' lead off another assist from Isi McMahon.

  • Gloria Allen started the scoring for the Catamounts at the 9:36 mark of the second quarter off the penalty insertion from Fiona McMahon and the setup from Anyia Woods.

  • Emily Enden tacked on the fourth goal for the Catamounts with 6:57 remaining in the first half off a centering feed from Allen.

  • Jaime Lewis scored the Catamounts' fifth goal of the first half after collecting a rebound off the initial shot from Emily Weaver and batting the ball into the back of the net with 5:14 remaining in the second quarter.

  • DelOrefice opened the scoring in the second half with a backhand shot off an assist from Alicia Battistelli with 11:42 remaining in the third quarter.

  • Lewis added to the Catamounts' lead at the 5:13 mark of the third quarter, placing the ball between the goalkeeper's legs off a stretch pass from Isi McMahon.

  • Isi McMahon scored her first goal of the game on a turnaround shot with just over two minutes remaining in the third quarter off an assist from Avery Forfa.

  • Lewis capped the scoring for the Catamounts by corralling her own rebound and scooping the ball into the back of the net with 1:13 remaining in the third quarter to complete the hat trick.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Lewis recorded her first career hat trick and led all Catamounts with six points on the day.

  • Isi McMahon ranked second on the team in points, tallying five with one goal and three assists. Her three assists marked a career-high.

  • DelOrefice tallied her first career multi-goal game netting two goals. 

  • Allen recorded her first collegiate points, scoring a goal and dishing out an assist for three points.

  • Enden and Maddy Weaver each scored a goal. Enden found the back of the cage for her second goal of the season, while Weaver scored her first of the season.

  • Emily Weaver, Battistelli, Woods, Forfa, and Fiona McMahon each recorded an assist.

  • The Catamounts put 25 shots on goal compared to LIU's one.

  • Vermont had 11 penalty corners to LIU's five.

  • With today's Win, Vermont Mutual Insurance Group will donate $100 to the Ronald McDonald House through the Cat's Win, Community Win's initiative.

The Catamounts have long rest before taking a trip to Fairfield, Conn., to play the Stags of Fairfield on Sunday, Sept. 20, at noon on University Field. The game will be streamed on YouTube.
