Mental Health Resources


In addition to having access to CSPC, student-athletes at the University of Vermont have access to a wide range of school, local, or national resources to help learn more about mental health. Listed below are some of the resources we most trust to provide quality information that might address your needs and a little bit about each resource.

University of Vermont Resources
  • Balancing Alcohol and Substances to Improve College Success (BASICS)
    • BASICS is a UVM resource designed to help students explore their alcohol and drug use in a supportive and non-shaming environment. BASICS sessions take place both individually and in groups.
  • Catamount Recovery Program
    • The Catamount Recovery Program is a resource and community for students who are in substance abuse recovery.
  • Concerning and/or Risky Event (CARE) Form
    • By filling out a CARE form, you may submit an anonymous concern about the wellbeing of a student at UVM. The concern is relayed to the Dean of Students Office, who organizes and mobilizes UVM resources to assist the student of concern.
  • Counseling and Psychiatry Services (CAPS)
    • UVM's primary mental health resource; student-athletes are welcome to schedule appointments at CAPS if they would prefer to not be seen at CSPC
  • Interfaith Center
    • The Interfaith Center is UVM's primary spiritual/religious campus identity center where those of all faiths and worldviews are welcome to engage in reflection, spiritual practice, and education.
  • LivingWell
    • LivingWell is UVM's homebase for all things health promotion and provides a wide ranges of programs and services.
  • Mosaic Center for Students of Color
    • The Mosaic Center is an identity center a UVM primarily focused on assisting students who self-identify as a person of color meet goals for academic achievement and engage in a process of personal growth, identity formation, and cultural development.
  • Nutrition Services
    • Nutrition services are provided at no-cost to UVM students; schedule an appointment with a registered dietitian at the link above.
  • Prism Center
    • The Prism Center is an identity center at UVM that primarily serves LGBTQA+ and allies at the university by providing a range of community building opportunities, resources, and events.
  • Women and Gender Equity Center (WAGE)
    • WAGE is a an identity center at UVM with the primary mission of advancing gender equity across identities through a series of programs, events, and campus advocacy.

Chittenden County/Vermont Resources
  • First Call for Chittenden County (802-488-7777)
    • 24/7 mental health crisis and referral line for those in Chittenden county
  • HOPE Works
    • Local support and advocacy for sexual violence survivors including UVM students.
    • Confidential services and advocacy can be reached 24/7 at 802-863-1236
  • Howard Center
    • Local organization that provides crisis, substance abuse, and general mental health resources to those in Chittenden county.
  • Vermont Crisis Text Line
    • Text "VT" to 741741 to be connected with a 24/7 crisis counselor.
National Mental Health Resources
  • Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance
    • National organization providing education and support to those suffering from depression and/or bipolar disorder.
  • JED Foundation
    • The JED foundation is a national organization with the primary mission of protecting the emotional health and reducing suicides among the nationals teens and young adults.
  • National Eating Disorders Association
    • National organization providing education and support to those struggling with eating disorders.
  • National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
    • Free and confidential support for those in distress and experiencing suicidal thought provided 24/7 at 1-800-273-8255
  • Steve Fund
    • The Steve Fund is dedicated to supporting the mental health and emotional well-being of young people of color.
  • Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
    • 24/7 free and confidential helpline to assist those suffering from substance abuse find local care and support.
  • Trevor Project
    • The Trevor Project is the world's largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning young people.

  • Athletes Connected
    • Program ran out of the University of Michigan addressing the student-athlete experience and its impact on mental health.
  • Hilinski's Hope Unit3d Podcast
    • A podcast hosted by Dr. Josie Nicholson of Ole Miss, where sport psychologists and mental health professionals team up to hold conversations for student athletes on mental health.
  • NCAA Mental Health Resources
    • NCAA mental health page containing education and research related to student-athletes and mental health
  • Player's Tribune: Mental Health Awareness
    • In this section of the Player's Tribune website, professional athletes open up and share their personal stories of their own mental health struggles.
  • US Center for Mental Health and Sport
    • The US Center for Mental Health and Sport provides trainings and educational resources in service of creating sporting environments conducive to supporting athlete mental health.
