EDMONTON, Alberta – Vermont assistant women's basketball coach and alum
Courtnay Pilypaitis '10 has been named to the Canadian National Team roster that will compete in the 2014 FIBA World Championship. Canada Basketball made the announced the team on Friday. Pilypaitis will travel with Team Canada to Turkey, for the tournament that is scheduled for Sept. 27 through Oct. 5.
Pilypaitis and Team Canada will play three exhibition games prior to the start of competition at the FIBA World Championship. The Canadians face Team USA on Sept. 15 at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN2.
Canada will also play a pair of exhibition games against Cuba and Spain on Sept. 19 and 20 in Logrono, Spain before begining play in the FIBA World Championships (see complete schedule below).
Pilypaitis, a member of the 2012 Canadian Olympic team that competed in London, is in her seventh year playing for Team Canada. She has played in 88 international games, including 70 with the senior squad.
Pilypaitis was named Canada's MVP during the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in 2012 and finished the tournament ranked third on the team in scoring. She averaged 7.5 points and 23 minutes per game during the Olympics as Canada reached the quarterfinal round.
Pilypaitis recently completed her second season as an assistant coach at her alma mater. During her four years at UVM, she put together arguably one of the best careers in a green and gold uniform. She led UVM to back-to-back America East Championships and NCAA Tournament appearances (2009 & 2010), including the program's first-ever NCAA victory in 2010, and was named the America East Most Outstanding Player of the America East Championship in 2009 and 2010.
She was also a four-time all-conference selection. Pilypaitis spent two seasons playing professionally for VICI Kaunas in Lithuania before returning to Vermont. During her professional career, she and was a two-time Eurobasket.com All-Lithuanian LMKL Import Player of the Year. She helped VICI Kaunas win back-to-back Lithuanian Cup titles and BWBL Championships.
