The schools traded 2-1 victories last season in their first meetings in Hockey East play, with each team winning by a goal on its home ice. The Catamounts lead the series 17-2-1 and are 10-1-1 in the last 12 meetings. The teams first met in 1963, Vermont's inaugural season of men's hockey, but they have matched up just four times since 1975.

The Catamounts are riding a six-game winning streak against UMass, which includes a pair of wins last year by the combined score of 14-2. Vermont downed UMass 11-1 on the road at the Mullins Center, which marked the most goals scored by a Catamount team since 1979 and matched the highest total in program history against another Division I opponent. UVM is 25-7-3 all-time in Burlington against UMass and has taken five of the last six meetings, but those contests have been decided by a total of eight goals.
