SCOUTING THE RIVER HAWKSUMass Lowell split a two-game series on the road against No. 6 Minnesota Duluth last weekend, dropping the first game 2-1 for its first loss of the season before responding with a 6-3 victory. The River Hawks are ranked fourth in the USCHO.com Poll and fifth in the USA Today/USA Hockey Poll this week. Adam Chapie has scored a team-high three goals, while Joe Gambardella leads the squad with four assists. UMass Amherst transfer Kevin Boyle has started all seven games in net and boasts a 1.40 goals against average and .949 save percentage. Norm Bazin is in his fifth season as the head coach and led UMass Lowell to 21 wins and the Hockey East title game last season.
SERIES HISTORYUMass Lowell has a slight edge of 22-16-7 in the series heading into Friday's 46th all-time matchup between the schools. The Catamounts fell 4-1 to Lowell in last year's Hockey East Semifinal at TD Garden as
Kevin Irwin scored the lone UVM goal in the first period. Vermont hasn't hosted UML since Senior Weekend during the 2013-14 season. Last year, the River Hawks took three points from the Catamounts in the final series of the regular season at Tsongas Center. All five meetings two years ago took place in a two-week span, and all five were decided by one goal as Lowell out-scored UVM 10-9 in the season series.
CATS TAKE THREE OF FOUR FROM HUSKIESVermont won 3-2 in the league opener at Northeastern last Thursday to win at Matthews Arena for the fifth time in its last six trips.
Dan Senkbeil scored his first career game-winning goal at the 13:46 mark of the third period to break a 2-2 deadlock. UVM fought back for a point with a 3-3 tie on Saturday at Gutterson Fieldhouse despite holding a 2-1 lead after two periods.
Anthony Petruzzelli scored the game-tying goal with 2:01 remaining in regulation for his second goal in as many games.
Mike Santaguida finished the Hockey East series with 49 saves.
CATAMOUNT NOTESJarrid Privitera is tied for fourth in Hockey East and tied for 25th nationally in goal scoring and is just one shy of his freshman year goal total (6). The sophomore is riding a three-game goal scoring streak with four tallies in that span, including one in each game of the Northeastern series.
Mario Puskarich has at least one point in six of his first seven games to rank 17th in Hockey East scoring, and he sits sixth in the league with 25 shots on goal to lead the team.
Alexx Privitera is four games away from his 100th career appearance.
