All-America Release | Senior CLASS ReleaseBOSTON - Mike Paliotta became the 22nd player in Vermont men's hockey history to be named an NCAA Division I All-American on Friday afternoon. The senior captain was tabbed a Second Team All-American by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) at Matthews Arena as the 2014-15 All-America teams were announced with the Hobey Baker Award.
Paliotta became the first Vermont skater since Viktor Stalberg in 2009 to be named an All-American and just the second UVM player to earn the honor since all-time leading scorer Martin St. Louis in 1997. Earlier this week, the senior became the first Catamount to earn All-New England honors since Stalberg six years ago.
Paliotta was also named to the Senior CLASS Second Team as part of the announcement for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award, given to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in Division I men's hockey. The honor is awarded to seniors with notable achievements in four areas of excellence: classroom, community, character and competition.
The senior adds to a long list of accolades with his All-America and Senior CLASS selections. He became the first Catamount to win the Bob Monahan Award as the Best Defenseman in New England, and was also recognized as the Best Defensive Defenseman in Hockey East.
Paliotta was named a 2015 Hockey East Second Team All-Star, joining
Chris McCarthy as the only two Catamounts to earn the honor since UVM joined Hockey East in 2005. The Westport, Connecticut native was also named to the All-Hockey East First Team by the Hockey East Writers and Broadcasters Association (HEWBA).
The captain led Vermont in scoring this season with a career-high 36 points and was the first defenseman to lead UVM in scoring since Louis Cote in 1978. The team MVP also led the Catamounts with a plus-15 rating and 151 shots on goal, the most by any Hockey East defenseman to rank fourth overall.
Paliotta was one of six players from Hockey East who were named All-Americans on Friday, including Jack Eichel and Matt Grzelcyk of Boston University, Jon Gillies of Providence, Kevin Roy of Northeastern, and Robbie Russo of Notre Dame.
