SCOUTING THE HUSKIESUConn (8-13-2, 4-7-2 HEA) is 3-1-1 in its last five games and earned three of four points during a low-scoring Hockey East series at Maine last weekend at Alfond Arena. Arizona Coyotes draft pick Max Letunov leads the Huskies in points (25) and assists (16), and is tied with rookie Tage Thompson with a team-best nine goals. Rob Nichols has started 21 of the team's 23 games in net with a 7-12-2 record, 2.75 goals against average, .913 save percentage, and two shutouts. Nichols was named the Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. On special teams, Connecticut is connecting at 18.9% on the power play and 79.1% on the penalty kill while averaging just 8.9 penalty minutes.
UCONN SERIES HISTORYFriday marks the 22nd all-time meeting in series history but just the fourth since 2003, which was
Kevin Sneddon's first year as head coach. All three Hockey East meetings between the schools have been 2-1 victories for the home squad, including a one-goal UVM win at Gutterson on Nov. 13. The win was Vermont's first on home ice this season as
Dan Senkbeil netted the game-winning goal at 9:05 of the third period. The Cats lead the series 18-2-1 and are 11-1-1 in the last 13 meetings.
SCOUTING THE MINUTEMENUMass Amherst (7-12-4, 2-7-4 HEA) has just one win in its last 15 games and hosts No. 4 Boston College on Friday before the Catamounts travel to Amherst. Last weekend, the Minutemen were swept by No. 5 UMass Lowell in a home-and-home series by the combined score of 9-1. Shane Walsh leads UMass with 15 goals and 20 points on the year, while Steven Iacobellis has a team-high 13 assists. Rookie Nic Renyard has started 15 games in net with a 4-8-4 record, 3.41 goals against average, and .902 save percentage. Former Vermont assistant John Micheletto is in his fourth year as the head coach and is assisted by UVM alums Joey Gasparini '06 and Ryan Miller '03.
UMASS SERIES HISTORYSaturday marks the 67th meeting of the all-time series, led by UVM 40-19-7. The Catamounts are riding a seven-game unbeaten streak (6-0-1) against UMass, which includes a pair of wins last year by the combined score of 14-2. Vermont downed UMass 11-1 in its last visit to the Mullins Center, which marked the most goals scored by a Catamount team since 1979 and matched the highest total in program history against another Division I opponent.

FRIARS HALT WIN STREAK | CaTV Highlights: Friday | SaturdayDefending NCAA champion Providence earned 3-1 and 6-3 victories last weekend to sweep a Hockey East series at Gutterson Fieldhouse. Friday was UVM's first home loss since Nov. 7 against UMass Lowell and snapped a four-game winning streak overall. Trevor Mingoia finished the series with three goals and two assists, including the game-winning tally each night for the Friars.
Brendan Bradley scored the lone Catamount goal on Friday for his seventh of the season during his 100th career game, while
Mario Puskarich tallied his team-high 20th point with a goal on Saturday.
MILESTONE WATCHBrendan Bradley skated in his 100th collegiate game last Friday and scored for the sixth time in his last 10 contests. Sneddon is just two away from his 200th victory behind the UVM bench and his 250th career NCAA win, but will be serving a one-game suspension from the league on Friday.
Brady Shaw eclipsed the 50-point plateau with a multi-point game against UNH on Jan. 2 and is only five games away from 100. Active scoring leader
Mario Puskarich posted his 80th collegiate point last Saturday, while
Alexx Privitera is three assists away from 50.
WHO'S NEXTVermont has next weekend off before resuming Hockey East play on Feb. 5-6 with a two-game home series against 18th-ranked Notre Dame. Friday, Feb. 5 is the Hockey East Skating Strides Against Cancer game. The team will wear pink jerseys that will be auctioned off to benefit the UVM Cancer Center.
