StatsÂ
ABOUT VERMONTUVM (2-3) earned back-to-back wins against NJIT and Holy Cross before falling to Providence on Feb. 27 and Michigan last Saturday. Vermont currently ranks eighth in the nation in scoring, posting 14 goals per game.
Â
The Catamounts pace the league in shots, averaging 44.20 per game, and have capitalized on the most man-up opportunities scoring 13 in five games. Vermont also boasts two of the nation's top-10 scorers, as junior
Cam Milligan is tied for sixth overall averaging 5.0 points per game, followed by classmate
Ian MacKay in eighth (4.8).
Â
Milligan, who tallied the fourth-most assists in a single season (38) at UVM last year, ranks top-5 in the NCAA in assists per game dishing out 2.75 helpers per contest. The Peterborough, Ontario native paces two other Catamounts in the top-5 conference spots in points per game, with MacKay ranking third, followed by senior
James Barlow in fourth (4.0).
Â
Milligan continues to make his way into program history at Vermont, as he is three assists away from breaking into the top-10 all-time career assist rankings (52).
Â
Through five games, MacKay has more than doubled his scoring production (24 points) with 15 goals and nine assists from the first five games of the 2015 season. The Port Elgin, Ontario native is on a 33-game point streak, tallying at least one mark in 33 of his 34 career appearances for Vermont. With a pair of goals against Canisius, MacKay will rank 10th all-time in program history for career goals scored (86).
Â
Barlow has also had an impressive senior campaign, as he is second on the team in points (20) and tied for first on the squad in goals with 15.
Â
LAST TIME OUTVermont outscored Michigan 5-2 in the fourth quarter, but penalties plagued the Catamounts as Michigan capitalized on 4-of-6 extra-man opportunities in its 15-13 win on Saturday in Ann Arbor.
Â
Six Catamounts posted a multi-point performance against the Wolverines, led by
Cam Milligan who matched his season-high with seven points on three goals and four assists.
Ian MacKay extended his point streak to 33 consecutive games as the junior recorded four points on three scores and a helper, and senior
James Barlow recorded a pair of goals and assists for Vermont as well.
Â
Jon Kaplan (2-2) made 11 saves in net for Vermont for his second double-figure save effort of the year.
Â
A heavily offensive first quarter was fueled by MacKay's hat trick in the first 15 minutes. The Wolverines kicked off the contest going up 1-0 early on, but Milligan struck from the top left of the attack box to tie it up on his seventh goal of the season.
Â
MacKay netted three unanswered goals throughout the remainder of the quarter to give Vermont a 4-3 cushion.
Â
Michigan took a two-goal lead midway through the second period and scored on a man-up opportunity, but was halted by Barlow on a Milligan helper down low in front of the U-M net (6-5). Â
Â
Dawes Milchling and Milligan propelled a 5-2 Vermont run in the fourth period as each player tallied his second score of the afternoon. Moments later,
Nick Bartlett brought the ball down the center of the field on a fast break and connected from 10 yards out of the goal (14-11).
Â
MacKay stormed the cage and a backhand feed across the center to Milligan with six minutes left in the game put Vermont within three (15-12). Barlow buried his second goal into Michigan's net, but Vermont's five-goal rally was not enough as the Catamounts fell to the Wolverines in the Big House.
Â
Freshman
TJ Subel made his debut at the X for Vermont, as the rookie won 13-of-24 faceoff attempts. Both teams posted 47 shots on the afternoon, while U-M held a narrow 27-24 ground ball advantage.
