OSHAWA, Ontario – Eight first-half goals for Canisius proved to be the deciding factor on Tuesday, as the Golden Griffins topped Vermont 11-6 in the first men's Division I lacrosse meeting in Canada at the Oshawa Civic Centre. UVM falls to 2-4 on the season as Canisius improves to 1-1.

Six Catamounts recorded a goal for Vermont on the afternoon as
Cam Milligan led UVM in points with a goal and an assist.
Justin Rosenberg returned to the cage for the Catamounts and made nine saves in three quarters.

James Edwards recorded a hat trick for the Golden Griffins and added a pair of assists for a game-high five points. Lewis Vaccaro also handed out a pair of assists and added a goal for Canisius.

Canisius jumped out to an early 5-2 lead in the opening quarter, including a pair of goals from Edwards. Milligan tallied the first score for Vermont on his 10th goal of the season, followed by freshman
Charlie Cobb with his second point in two games.

The Golden Griffins scored twice in the first three minutes of the second period, but were halted by
Braiden Davis shortly after on an assist from Milligan. After Canisius took an 8-3 lead midway through the quarter,
James Barlow cut into the Golden Griffins' advantage with the 16th goal of his senior campaign to close out the half.

When the teams took to the field for the second half,
Karl Weller tallied Vermont's lone third-quarter goal after a 10-minute scoring drought. With a final period to play, the Catamounts trailed Canisius 9-5.

Jimmy May took advantage of a UVM penalty and put one past Rosenberg to advance the Golden Griffin's lead to 10-5.
Ian MacKay responded with his first score of the game, extending his point streak to 34 consecutive games. Connor Kearnan registered the final score of the contest with 2:32 remaining to give the Golden Griffins their first win of the 2016 season.

Jeff Wilson stopped six shots for Canisius, while the Golden Griffins outshot Vermont 41-20. The Catamounts cleared 17-of-20 attempts but were edged 25-21 in ground balls.

UVM returns home for its third game in seven days on Saturday to take on Sacred Heart. Face off at Virtue Field against the Pioneers is set for 1 p.m. All home games and conference matchups will be streamed live for free via AmericaEast.tv.
