Carla Godsman and
Rachael Picchi each netted goals as the Vermont field hockey team held off Central Michigan 2-1 Friday in non-conference action at Moulton Winder Field.

The season-opening win moves UVM to 1-0 on the campaign, while the Chippewas fall to 0-1.
Vermont won the race to the scoreboard in the 17th minute. The sequence unfolded when freshman
Rachel Phillips sent a feed towards the net which was deflected in by Godsman, giving UVM a 1-0 lead.
The Catamounts doubled their lead shortly thereafter, as Picchi took a feed from junior
Tess O'Brien, extending the lead to 2-0 in the 23rd minute.
Central Michigan got within one goal in the 59th minute. The play took place when Emily Barber fired a shot from just inside the circle, ultimately being redirected past UVM goalkeeper
Lena Benwood. The goal moved the Chippewas' deficit to 2-1, which stood for the balance of the match.
The Catamounts led CMU in shots 16-13 as well as penalty corners 10-4. Benwood turned aside six shots in goal for Vermont, while Central Michigan keeper Lily Amadio made seven stops.
