CATS BLAST WATERLOO | CatamounTV Highlights
The Catamount offense was on full display last Sunday as defenseman
Matt O'Donnell scored twice and added an assist, leading Vermont to a 6-1 win over Waterloo in its lone exhibition tune up. UVM's special teams excelled in the victory, going 3-for-8 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill. The Cats finished with a dominant 49-21 edge in shots on goal and had at least 15 shots in each period.
Ross Colton (1 G, 3 A),
Rob Darrar (1 G, 2 A), and
Liam Coughlin (1 G, 2 A) combined for 10 points.
LEADERSHIP GROUP
Last month, Sneddon announced the four members of his leadership group for the upcoming campaign. Darrar will serve as team captain, while seniors
Travis Blanleil and
Anthony Petruzzelli and sophomore
Derek Lodermeier have been elected assistant captains. Blanleil and Petruzzelli will begin their second seasons wearing an 'A' for the Cats.
SCOUTING COLORADO COLLEGE
Colorado College brings a young roster to Burlington with nine freshmen and not a single senior; CC is one of only two teams in the nation with no seniors. The Tigers finished the 2016-17 season at 8-24-4 overall and 4-16-4 in the NCHC. Mason Bergh is the team's leading returning scorer after posting 14 goals and 10 assists for 24 points last year. Alex Leclerc started 32 games in net during his rookie campaign with a 3.19 goals against average and a .900 save percentage. Mike Haviland begins his fourth season as the head coach at CC, which beat Lethbridge 4-1 in exhibition action last Saturday.
1996 FROZEN FOUR
Vermont and Colorado College met in the 1996 NCAA Semifinal in Cincinnati. Before the game, an arena worker drilled through the rink floor into the refrigerating line, spilling coolant onto the ice. The opening faceoff was delayed and ice conditions were negatively affected by the spill. In double overtime, Jay McNeill scored on his own rebound as the puck hit his hand to beat Tim Thomas, resulting in a 4-3 win for the Tigers after nearly 90 minutes of action. No video replay existed at the time and CC went on to the national title game, where it fell in overtime to Michigan.
SERIES HISTORY
This weekend will mark the fourth and fifth all-time meetings in the series and the first in over 20 years. Vermont's only win came in the first-ever matchup back in 1976. The Tigers won the aforementioned meeting in the 1996 Frozen Four and then shut out the Catamounts the following season.
WHO'S NEXT
Vermont hits the road for the first time next weekend to play a pair of ECAC squads, facing Quinnipiac on Saturday, Oct. 14 and Union on Sunday, Oct. 15. Both games are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
